Or one of the actual water levels where you’re chased through the entire stage by a huge water snake. There’s one filled with crystalline shards that slide and move whenever you jump on them, and one packed with soap bubbles that you end up swimming through even though you’re meant to be at the top of a mountain. It’s a bad first impression but dig a little deeper and the game does have some genuinely memorable stages, the best of which really are as good as the Super Mario of old. The series started on the DS (where it become one of the best-selling games of all time) and most of the time this just looks like a high-res update. Everything looks just as it used to, only with slightly more detailed graphics, moderately larger stages, and slightly more enemies. So it’s no surprise to start the game and be greeted by a 2D map dividing up the levels and the usual snow, lava, and castle stages. games is that they go back to the original NES and SNES games and offer up an old school 2D adventure in the same style. The rather paradoxical idea of the New Super Mario Bros. game would look like nearly three decades later not even the most pessimistic fan would’ve predicted something as unadventurous as this. U certainly leans on the latter a lot for inspiration, and by and large offers up a reasonable pastiche of its gameplay, but if you’d asked someone back in 1990 what they expected a brand-new Super Mario Bros.
